As you can see from the comparison chart there are several different types of strollers, that could work really well when travelling, but you really need to reflect and analyze your specific needs and preferences to choose the right travel double stroller for you.

The best way is to ask yourself some of these questions:

  • How often are you going to travel and use a stroller?
  • Where are you going to bring the stroller?
  • Do you often travel with a car?
  • Is it your main stroller or a second just for travel?
  • Do you have space to store it?
  • What’s your budget?

Before to look at each stroller in more detail, I will first group them based on kids age needs to make sure you take in consideration even the smaller details. After we will move on to preferences based on different types available.

10 BEST DOUBLE STROLLER FOR TRAVEL: ANALYSIS

BEST STROLLER FOR TWINS
JOOLZ GEO 2

joolz geo2
The Joolz Geo2 is an inline stroller, expandable from single to double. It can be used as a twins travel stroller because it is suitable from birth, or a second seat can be added later.
It is really narrow, compact, and travel system compatible.

The best travel selling point for me is that it can be folded with both the seats attached. When you travel, you often need to close it to board a plane or jump in a taxi, avoiding to waste time with adapters or multiple pieces is something you will not regret.

The Joolz Geo2 isn't the lightest weight double stroller but the seats have 20kg capacity so it can be used probably until you don't need a stroller anymore.

PROS
-Closes with 2 seats attached (not with the carrycots)
-Freestanding when folded
-Practical handle at the front to pull it like a suitcase or lift it in an easier way.
-Can be used from birth
-One click removable wheels
-It is possible to attach 2 car seats (with adapter)
-No adapter needed for carrycot or seats
-If you use it for different age kids you can add the footboard for the older child (see accessories below)
CONS
-Bottom carrycot could do with a bit more space above it
-No space for the basket when 2 cot or 2 seats are fitted, see below for the side pack, a great accessory as an alternative
-5 point belts are a little tricky to use as the clips of the 2 straps on each side must be joined together before inserting into the buckle, which can become irritating.

The smallest double stroller on the market when folded, it is the perfect travel companion.
Only 9kg and can be carried as a backpack leaving your hands free to interact with the kids is unbeatable for me.

There is definitely some room for improvement, like a little deeper recliner or a sturdier frame, but at this price could also be bought as a second stroller just to bring on holiday. Definitely one of the best umbrella double stroller.

This compact stroller, expandable from single to double, is just amazing.

It is a really small folding stroller, although it only folds with one seat attached. Even better the seats easily transform in bassinet so it can be used from birth and there is no need to buy any extra piece.

There are not many faults, the only additional thing to note is that is probably better for newborn and toddler rather than twins as the second seat is slightly smaller and it has 15kg limit.

While side by side strollers offer a great variety of choice on the market from the budget point of view, inline strollers seem generally on the expensive side.

If you are looking for a budget friendly option, then the Joie double pram could be for you. It's really narrow and light, and both kids sit in a position that allow a great view.
Doesn't come with many accessories, but some universal pieces like the super cheap Uber foot muff will for sure compensate (see accessory below)

At the same time this feature makes it quite long so you will need to adjust your driving style. You will not be able to use it for twins as only one seat reclines completely flat and could only take 1 car seat. It is freestanding when folded, but still quite big.

I think this is a great solution if you travel a lot with your own car and you know you have enough space to hold it.

This stroller certainly does not stand out for its style, but it does an amazing job catering for parents travelling with kids with quite different needs.

Many parents that have a second child with a 3 year gap would not consider a double stroller, but this stroller could be useful on trips with a lot of moving around. A 2 year old usually still needs a place to sit and rest/nap during the day while travelling, but a 5 year old will still get tired quickly however they just need a place to rest for half an hour. This compact stroller for two can be a really affordable solution

PROS
Possibility to buy a second proper seat

Great adjustable canopy
CONS
Not great for all terrain
Not appealing aesthetically

This is an overall great stroller. This is the latest version of the City mini double, with improved details like the fabric, calf rest, and peek a boo canopy window. It maintains some of the previous great features like the easy folding system, that works really well but the stroller still needs quite some space to be stored, and it is still quite heavy to be moved around.

One key feature when you travel is that the carrycot is approved for overnight sleep, so you don't need to find a place that has baby cots!
The other key thing is the seat weight limit that is one of the highest in this group

WHAT IF…YOU COULD USE A SINGLE STROLLER

After evaluating so many 2 seat strollers, there is one last option that I would like to consider. Every family is different and has needs that, although similar, can vary quite a bit, for everyone traveling means something different.

In this article I try to cover all types of situation, preferences, needs that a parent finds himself considering when they want to travel with two small children.

We have analyzed what I consider to be the best double strollers for travel, but I feel that the options would be incomplete if I didn’t also add Babyzen YOYO+.

Babyzen YOYO+ is an amazing single light stroller, is so compact that it is approved to be carried as hand luggage on most airlines. Since its launch in 2012 it has been one of the best travel stroller for single baby on the market, but with the latest accessories they introduced like the sit / stand platform and the carrycot I think it could become an amazing light double stroller.

This option can be ideal for that group of parents that already have a child 2 and a half / 3 years old and are looking for a solution for the arrival of the second.

Babyzen YOYO + is a true travel system, it can be used from birth with the soft cradle or the car seat specially designed by Besafe. It weighs just over 6kg, but despite this the seat supports up to 22kg and the sit / stand platform up to 20kg.
It opens in an instant and when closed it has a comfortable strap to be carried on the shoulder, or you can buy a bag to carry it as a backpack.

This is definitely another very valid option to consider. Obviously there are many other single pram models that can host the so-called univeral platform, but at the moment the Babyzen YOYO+ remains the smallest and lightest that offers a complete complete travel system solution

Do fear to fly with 2 kids? No worries, read my guide to survive flights with babies and toddlers.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST DOUBLE STROLLER FOR TRAVEL BASED ON AGE GROUPS

It is good to be clear on the moment in time in family life that you decide to buy a travel double buggy. This is important because the needs of a small child change very quickly and are very different from those of a toddler, so it is important to evaluate the different products based on your priority.

There are usually 3 moments in time when parents evaluate the purchase of a double stroller:

You could also be interested in “The reality of travelling with twins and how to make it possible”!

At the birth of twin babies

In the happy case of expecting twins, two options could be considered:

  • The purchase of a travel system double stroller that covers the first 6-12 months of twin life and then a cheaper lightweight twin stroller.

Probably the parents who already know that they will buy two strollers from the beginning will focus attention on the characteristics of the carrycot, the maneuverability and the possibility of positioning the carrycots in order to have both children facing the parents.

The preconditions are not dissimilar from the next group, but in this case finding a low price product will often be important.
  • The purchase of the best stroller for twins that is a faithful companion from birth to 4-5 years.

These are usually the more expensive models where careful research based on individual needs will pay off for long-term satisfaction.

These strollers must be suitable to be used from birth, so they must offer the possibility of reclining the seats completely flat or adding carrycots. It is important to make sure of this feature when choosing, because not all double buggies are designed in this way.

This type usually offers the largest number of configurations and the majority of the models are double stroller travel system, where it is possible to attach two car seats for newborns.

The weight that each seat can bear is also an important consideration. In the longer term, it is important that the stroller is able to support the weight of a toddler who could approach 20 kg at the age of three.

I am part of this category. Liam and Santiago have just turned 4 and our Joolz Geo has accompanied us on all our travels; from the shortest city break in Venice during the carnival, to the longest trips to distant Japan and Peru, but he also came with us to the beach on a bitter-sweet holiday in Malta and on the slopes of the Dolomites when we decided it was time to start skiing again.

We own a Joolz Geo double and we have been using it happily for 4 years now with no regrets, you can read here a full review.

JOOLZ GEO

At the birth of the first child in anticipation of having a second child in a short time

Again there are two possibilities:

  • Some parents opt for one of the previous solutions but many, not wishing to tempt fate, prefer to choose a single to double stroller, usually a stroller that can be used as a single and subsequently be expanded with a second seat to become a double stroller newborn and toddler.

In this case you will have the greatest choice, because some models do not allow the use of two cots at the same time, but there are many models that allow you to have a cot and a seat.

Parents who look into this category must make sure of the ease of access for the two children, consider whether the carrycot and the seat can be used in different positions or if the seat can be combined with a car seat.
  • If the plan instead, is to let 2 or 3 years go by between the two children, then another option is to purchase a double stroller with sit and stand option, or a stroller with toddler stand. These are basically a single stroller that offers a secondary smaller seat bench or the possibility of adding a small pedestal where the older child can stand / sit.

If you expect more than two years (better 2 and half / 3) of difference between the first and second child, then the purchase of this type of solution could be considered.

Alternatively, many single strollers have now developed creative platforms that attach easily behind the seat (usually on the brake bar) and a child can stand there in front of the parent. Some also offer the option to sit, more details below.

This option may seem very interesting when traveling, but it precludes the possibility for both children to rest while out and about. This is not to be underestimated as, when travelling, the children can usually get really tired and fall asleep much more easily while around in the stroller, even when they have already given up their afternoon nap for some time.

When children are a bit older

Around 3 years old, the use of the pram is no longer an everyday essential, but still necessary especially when travelling

  • In this case parents usually look for a really lightweight double stroller, or the most compact double stroller when folded and something really easy to transport.

The market for twin strollers is becoming much larger and every day a new super light, extremely compact, small enough to fit in the purse stroller, is invented … well maybe the purse idea is more for single strollers but it is getting better!

However…returning to the twin light stroller: the most important thing to consider for this group is the weight that each seat can support.

This type of stroller can safely accompany you on trips until the children are 4 or even 5 years old. When making adventurous and ambitious trips, the children get tired a lot. Sometimes giving them a lift in a pram for a short period of time is all that is needed to avoid a meltdown.

For this reason, in a double stroller for toddlers it is important that the seat is able to adequately support the weight. Liam and Santiago at 3 years old already weighed almost 20 kg each, many light strollers reach only 15 kg per seat!

If you travel often with your baby or toddler by plane you may find it useful to read my dedicated article here.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF DOUBLE STROLLER

Let’s now analyze the advantages and disadvantages of the three different types of strollers for two:

  • side by side double stroller
  • inline double stroller
  • umbrella double stroller

Side by side double stroller

This is the classic stroller, where the seats are placed side by side and the children can watch and interact with the outside world more equally. Many double side by side stroller offer the option of positioning carrycots and seats in different ways.

The advantages of these models are obviously the ease with which parents can interact and look after the children and, for the children, they both get to sit in the front seat.

The disadvantages are the size. I must say that the manufacturers constantly improve their models and periodically launch the new smallest twin stroller, but it is still a feature to be carefully considered.

While travelling the advantages and disadvantages are more or less the same as during the everyday, although usually one is more positive in spirit to face them.

Especially in Europe where the historic centers of most cities are protected, it is often not possible to find some of the expected dimensional standards. The doors of the hotels may be too small, it may be difficult to enter cafes or restaurants, and even in some museums the visit through the narrow rooms of a historic building may be difficult. Even passing on some sidewalks may be impossible.

Having said that, many people will only consider this type of stroller so, if this category is the best for you, the best double stroller side by side is certainly the Mountain Buggy Nano duo. It tick all the boxes: light, compact when folded, easy to carry, it can be used in any age combination and it is car seat compatible. Read below more details and

INLINE STROLLERS ARE PERFECT WHEN YOU LIVE IN A BIG CITY

Inline double stroller

This type is much more recent than the other two and there are now many variations on the market. The seats are positioned one behind the other or one under the other.

Most of these models can transform from single to double stroller, therefore are perfect if you are considering having a second child soon.

There are many advantages. These narrow double strollers are perfect both in everyday life and for traveling. Some of these models are even smaller than some single pram models.
I can tell you there is a little grin of satisfaction on my face when I could enter a lift with my Joolz Geo with 2 kids onboard and my friend with a single pram couldn’t !!!!

HOT TIP: if you choose this model of compact double stroller, check the locking system and the convenience of transport, when you are traveling you want a practical thing that closes without removing any element from the chassis.

For example I left out of this list some popular models like the ICandy Peach or the Bugaboo Donkey because you can’t fold them with the seats attached and I think this is a key feature when you travel.

There are also disadvantages of course. Parents may find it more difficult to reach the child behind or below. The child who is under / behind has a much more limited view which as they grow up can lead to small quarrels. Some models develop a lot in length compromising the maneuverability of the stroller.

If this category is the best for you, the best inline double stroller is certainly the Joolz Geo2 double. Suitable for any age group, easy to fold without removing the seat, solid travel system, super easy to maneuver.

Phil and Ted Voyager comes immediately after Joolz Geo, also suitable for any age group, easy to fold removing only one seat, solid travel system, super easy to maneuver.
The 2019 model is so good that if it was available when I bought the Joolz Geo it would have been really difficult to choose.
The challenge here is the weight limit on the second seat which is lower, meaning it would be difficult to use the bottom seat past the 3 years mark.

If the price is a barrier then a great really low cost alternative for an inline double stroller for newborn + toddler (no twins) is the Joie evalite duo. Unbeatable price for a double light stroller, which can also accommodate an infant car seat. It is not perfect, but functional especially if the idea is to use it mainly when travelling.

Umbrella double stroller

Back in the day, before the advent of the 3-in-1 pram, parents would have used a carrycot for a newborn and then moved to use an umbrella stroller. These types of strollers have always been born with the idea of being super light, compact, and cheap.

The same characteristics apply to the double versions, although there are great differences between the models. There are really cheap double umbrella stroller on the market that despite being straightforward still offer a good product.
However, if on the one hand in this category there are frequently the lightest double umbrella stroller or the smallest folding double stroller, you must pay close attention to the maneuverability, if the seats recline enough, and to the maximum weight that each seat can support.

The main advantages are obviously the lower price and the reduced size, parents who use the car a lot to move around and travel tend to leave it directly in the luggage rack for convenience.

The disadvantages as I mentioned before often concern the weight limit that each seat can hold, limiting their use for those parents with children a little bigger than the average. Additionally the seats are often fixed making it difficult for small children to take a nap, and usually the wheels are small and do not facilitate smooth rolling on all terrains.

If this category is the best for you, the best double umbrella stroller for traveling is the Britax Romero Double. Some may judge this choice questionable, but although it is not optimal as a stroller for every day because maybe it does not recline enough or it cannot be used for newborns, on the other hand among all the stroller for 2 this isn’t just a double umbrella stroller lightweight, but it is also really compact when folded and very easy to carry with its backpack bag when you are going around.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN CONSIDERING BEST DOUBLE TRAVEL STROLLER

So far we have analyzed the different types of stroller and the different moments in which we usually purchase a stroller.
The last few things I would like to focus on are the ideal characteristics of the travel stroller. It’s difficult to find the perfect stroller, but there are some elements that should be evaluated carefully, no matter what you choose:

  • Weight
  • Ease of transport
  • The age gap covered
  • The wheels

It will not be easy to satisfy all the criteria, but if you have to, it is important you know what prioritize.

I’ll give you an example to help you understand what I mean.

These are the main reasons that lead me choose the Joolz Geo versus other prams: I wanted a stroller that could be used from birth till 4+, I wanted a stroller narrow enough to easily enter small shops, buses, and London cabs by myself. I wanted a stroller that could be folded easily in one piece and with wheels good enough for all terrain. I would have liked a lighter stroller but it was at the bottom of my priorities as I live on the ground floor and when I travel there is always my sporty husband to do all the lifting.

Double stroller for travel: weight/dimension

Why is it important to find the lightest double stroller? When a stroller has to carry 2 babies weighing 20 kg each, it does not make much difference to push 50 kg or 55 kg (considering 10 or 15 kg of stroller) it will still be tough.
However the other thing you need to consider when you travel is that the stroller without the children, must be put in the car, sent by plane, carried up the stairs, while also carrying children and suitcases … that’s why the lighter the better!

Double stroller for travel: ease of transport and closure

When traveling with children it is important to keep your hands as free as possible and so finding a compact twin stroller that also has a smart folding system is essential.

The ideal are the pushchairs that close with one hand without needing to disassemble the seats or anything else. Some pushchairs once closed stand alone or can be dragged like a suitcase, others can be carried like a backpack.
Try to avoid tandem double stroller that need different attachments to fix seats/carrycot, less things to remember when you travel!

Once closed, size is also important. Many times I would have liked to change our beloved Joolz Geo only because despite it closing easily it still takes up a lot of space in the car boot (the wheels remove easily which helps to compact it when needed).

This is a very important consideration if you often take rental cars and want to save money by choosing compact cars … if too bulky, once you put the stroller in the car boot you have to play Tetris to find room for everything else !!!!

we rented a really small car in Madeira, but we manage to fit everything
we managed to fit everything in there, but it was REAAALLY difficult!!!

This element seems obvious, but there are so many things to consider when looking for the best travel double stroller that it might escape. Try to decide right away if you want only one stroller to accompany you from birth until the babies no longer need it or if you are willing to change it. Do not forget to check, in case of newborn twins, that the chassis is designed for two carrycots and that it is a double travel system strollers, so 2 car seats can be attached.

Double stroller for travel: the wheels

Wheels are an element that contribute significantly to the total weight of the stroller, but they are also what guarantees a smooth ride or not! The lightest twin stroller often have small plastic wheels.
When two children of 15kg each are seated on one of these strollers, maneuverability is often compromised, and the stroller is heavy to move especially on uneven surfaces or when you need to climb a small difference in height.

A stroller that accompanies you for travel but also in everyday life must therefore have a good set of air or foam filled wheels, but if you are looking for a stroller only for weekends away in the city, where the surfaces are mainly flat and smooth then this element is less important.

I hope this guide will help you clarify your ideas and choose the best stroller for you. While analyzing the best options available, I also tried to cover various price ranges.

Selected strollers range from around £ 150 up to over £ 1,000. Do not despair if the model you want is one of the more expensive, there is an excellent market for well-kept second-hand strollers (do not imagine how many people buy a stroller and then realize that it was the right one).
If the idea of a used stroller does not reassure you, you can always take it to a specialized center that can sanitize it and make it look like new!

I hope this guide will help you clarify your ideas and choose the best stroller for you. However, don’t beat yourself up if in the end you realize that the stroller you bought is not for you (especially with the first child it is one of the trickiest purchases to make), do not forget there is an excellent market for second hand strollers and you shouldn’t have any problems selling it!
